Couple Creates Scholarship in Honor of Late Daughter

Giving back was always important to the late Samuel ’52 and Betty ’52 Lundhigh. Through their estate, they recently established the Lisa Lundhigh memorial scholarship at Simpson College. Lisa was the couple’s late daughter who never had the opportunity to pursue an education of her own due to health complications. The pursuit of education and improving one’s life and the lives of others was always important to the Lundhighs. Through this gift, they are giving the next generation of Simpson students the same opportunity they had.

Though Sam and Betty knew each other at Simpson, they didn’t formally start dating until after graduation. They were wed in 1954 and Sam pursued a career in the oil business. The couple settled down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they became involved in the Tulsa community. While Sam and Betty were longtime supporters of Simpson College, they were also involved with St. Jude’s, Salvation Army and the Tulsa Nature Conservatory.

“Giving back was always at the forefront of their minds. They were both so appreciative of the help they received along the way. They knew they wanted to pay it forward,” says the couple’s niece, Lana McLaren.

“If Sam and Betty could speak to Simpson students today, I think they would tell them to study hard and enjoy your time at Simpson,” adds Lana. “Don’t take this opportunity and life for granted.”

Lana is looking forward to attending the scholarship luncheon during homecoming week see Simpson College firsthand and meet some of the students who will benefit from the generosity of Sam and Betty. “I’ve heard about Simpson College from my Aunt Betty and how much the school meant to her and Sam. I am so excited for the opportunity to not only represent them on campus but also experience what makes Simpson special.”
