Friend of the College Memorializes Her Mother

Lelah Pote Eastwood

Lelah Pote Eastwood ’16 is remembered through a scholarship established by her daughter

If the saying “a mother’s love knows no bounds” is true, then it’s also true that a child’s love for a mother knows no bounds. This was certainly the case for Lee Eastwood Crockett, a friend of Simpson College and daughter of Lelah Pote Eastwood, class of 1916.

Ms. Crockett, a graduate of Cal-Berkley, spent her career in the U.S. Foreign Service in South and Latin America and retired to northern Arizona while caring for her mother. She always knew that her mother loved Simpson College and the education it provided her. Mrs. Eastwood graduated with an English degree and taught English for several years.

In recognition of her mother’s love for her alma mater, Ms. Crockett established the Lelah Pote Eastwood Endowed Scholarship in her estate plan. The four-year scholarship will financially assist young women studying English at Simpson College. An endowed fund provides financial resources to the college every year in perpetuity.

When Ms. Crockett established this fund in her estate plan over 20 years ago, she also informed the College Advancement Office so the scholarship could be drafted to fit both her priorities and the college’s policies. The scholarship became a reality following Ms. Crockett’s death in 2018.
